A Turn of Events

We were blessed with a glimpse into the future, but a glimpse is all it was; With a tiny heart that struggled to beat like every other does.

Our news has changed and we'll adapt as so many others do; But how I'll tell those eager siblings, I haven't got a clue.

I rest assured knowing that our family has been spared from a greater and painful grief, and on some strange level, we must accept the fact that this really is a relief.

We are surrounded with each other for now, and will continue preparing a nest, for the little one who will eventually stay when the time is at its best.

With gratitude I smile and move forward with two monkeys by my side, they're shouts and laughter subside our tears and overflow our hearts with pride.

Elliott's Words

Below is an email communication between Elliott's teacher and me following a "note sent home" incident last week. Enjoy!

Hi there! So, I hear there was a little action with Elliott and the sub? Seeing as my son's version is a little "spotty" (at best), could I ask for your interpretation as to what occurred?

Many thanks!

Felecia,

Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday. We had a very busy day catching everybody up--yesterday was the first day that everyone was here at school in a long time!

I spoke with my substitute about Elliott's behavior. She said that he was interrupting her and was not being respectful. (Along with about 4 other children.) I'll keep you updated if I see anything else going on.

Congrats--Elliott shared your exciting news. . .here's what he said, "My mom was getting headaches and not feeling good and then all of sudden she found out she was pregnant. She was like WHAT THE HECK?! My mom and dad don't know how it happened." Oh, if only we all were that innocent. :-)

Oh Baby!

It was a magical moment when I informed first my loving husband, and then our two precious children, that I was with child...

((SNORT!))

Okay, seriously folks - this is how it all went down...

I started a pot of water to boil for pasta and remembered the little package I had just gotten from the drugstore. Fighting to get up to the bathroom, telling somebody not to shove somebody else, I made my way in and did my 'job'.

Silence and a exhilaration were mine for all of 4 minutes until I was beckoned out of my maternal trance to see what all the witching-hour racket was about.

I went about my routine, only now I was smiling a lot more and far too distracted to notice that my second grader was zoning out in front of the TV when he was supposed to be reading. When Andy came home, completely unwaivering from his task at hand. You see, we had carpet laid a few days prior, and as my mother so horrifically discovered, a CRITTER had been allowed in during the project. Andy made sure he set all eight (yes, EIGHT) mouse traps before finally making eye contact long enough to say 'hello dear'.

We sat down to dinner when Andy realized that the tortilla chips we were munching with our soup was a new purchase. "Did you go grocery shopping?" "No" (smile) "Went to CVS" (crunch crunch). He reminded Noah to sit on his bottom and Elliott to chew with his mouth shut, and said "You're _________, aren't you?" (mouthing the word 'pregnant' for the sake of little ears")

Talk about stealing my thunder!

Fast forward a few days (after finding out from my doctor's office that I am already 11 weeks along...)

We decided to tell Elliott our family's good news via a game of Hang Man. When he figured out all but 3 or 4 letters, his big baby blues filled up with tears and he looked up to ask "Is this SERIOUS?" Oh boy was he mad at us! Not only did my careful and cautious child have to come to terms with a change to his world, but he now knows HOW this change came to be (eh hm...) Without going into too much dramatic detail, he cried for 2 hours straight and even threatened to run away (okay, didn't even realize he knew what 'running away' was!)

We ended the night on a good note and a brownie. Currently, he is thrilled about the entire thing and tells everybody about our news (he once even urged me to discuss it during a phone call not realizing it was only a telemarketer...) Needless to say, I am very happy about this turnaround.

As for my little Noah... you see, he's growing himself a baby too. We discuss all kinds of details about taking care of our babies and we tell anybody who happens to come along that we are "very happy for the baby in our tummies" Both Andy and Elliott's testosterone levels were dismally affected by Noah's take on it, and they tried to correct him a few times but they now realize it's easier to just go with it. The silver lining is that Noah is eating more green veggies these days, realizing it's good for our babies.

Other than that, it's been interesting sharing our news with those around us. As you can imagine, the grandma's and grandpa's, auntie's and uncles are very excited about it. But there has been some other mixed reactions too. About 3 people blurted out "But you weren't having any more children!" (I had no idea there was a biography of me out there somewhere!) And two people suggested we are glutton's for punishment (which didn't hold a tone of jest, like you would assume...) Oh well, we broke the mold. We're going past the 2.5 kids and allowing ourselves to be outnumbered!

I look into the future and realize that by having another baby, I will simply be making room for more laughter - that's what family's all about.
